Not for nothing did the great Christian feminist pioneer Josephine Butler call Galatians 3:28 'the Magna Carta' of human freedom. It is part of St Paul's God-given vision of divine humanity as profoundly transformed into the fullness of the freedom, unity and mystery of God: beyond all difference. This, in Paul's eyes, was not to undercut the significance of our respective identities. These are real enough and need affirming as appropriate, Indeed, as a whole, the letter to the Galatians is a powerful paean to the freedom and joy of Christ which all can enter, irrespective of whether we are Jew or gentile, male or female, or any other human marker. Let us therefore rejoice in our human diversity, for in it we enter more deeply into the mystery of God.
