The importance of lived experience and attentive reflection on it can hardly be over-emphasised. For those with a deep spiritual yearning, it is not the whole of the journey. The wisdom of the ages, particularly in holy scriptures and wider tradition, are vital to us all. Yet all of that is still nothing unless it connects and coheres in each human life. In turn, our own particular life journeys and spiritual experiences then enlarge those of others: past, present and future. For these are precious treasures for us all. They are not to be dismissed or despised, trampled on or cast aside, but honoured as expressions of human encounter with the divine and as fresh signals of transforming life. For God is both much much more mysterious and amazingly closer to us than we can ever imagine. Are we however taking enough time to linger, listen, love and be loved?
